Awesome Foundation Oahu is pleased to announce their September recipient of $1,000 to Fern Elementary School Basketball Program.  AFOahu was contacted by Blake Lau, a third grade teacher at Fern Elementary school in Kalihi. Mr. Lau wrote to us regarding his project as the first basketball program at his elementary school. He informed us that his school consists of mostly students of Chuukese, Marshallese, Filipino, Tongan and Samoan heritage and that many of his students live in poverty and are not involved in structured activities after school. Due to this, often behavior in school can be very alarming. Mr. Lau would like to start an after school extracurricular activity where students could learn a number of skills that associate with doing better in school academically and socially.

The goal of the program would be to create and implement an upper grade (4-5) basketball program as an extracurricular activity as an opportunity for students to strive in multiple areas and skills. In this program participants would gain an understanding that school is important to be able to participate in extracurricular activities, promote coming to school is essential, respecting yourself, others and school are important, a positive attitude matters, providing students the opportunity to promote individual and team skills, to develop and experience a competitive feeling, to learn and practice good sportsmanship skills, to learn and understand why rules are important, respecting others, and to develop a sense of commitment to a team and yourself.

This project is just a start at Fern Elementary school, the big picture goal is to unite all Kalihi district schools, so they can all have a basketball program and create an elementary basketball league for students to participate in and learn an array of skills, while living positive, healthy lifestyles.

This all sounds great, right??  Well here is where AWESOME comes in.  The $1,000 will be used to purchase basketballs, cones, jerseys and all other materials needed.  We are thrilled to help.  If Mr. Lau is willing to volunteer his time to help out his students, we are ready to pitch in to help with the needed supplies.  We appreciate all you do Mr. Lau and look forward to one day going to a Kalihi basketball game!
