Kailua Intermediate School (KIS) Advanced and Beginning Band is Awesome Foundation’s June 2014 recipient of $1000 check! Maya Arakaki and Kelci Hooker, both 7th graders in KIS band, submitted the request on behalf of all 115 bandmembers.  KIS band program teaches students not only how to play an instrument and read music, but how to work together. Band teacher, Ms. Kusunoki, emphasizes life lessons like responsibility, teamwork, respect, leadership, compassion, and how to be a good person.

Throughout the year several fundraisers are held to help offset the cost of instruments, travel, purchase of music and supplies and to loan instruments to students at no charge.  However, next year there is an expected increase in the number of students, consequently more instruments than money collected through fundraisers are needed.

Awesome’s $1000 check will be used to repair broken instruments.  This way, each student who participates in band can have their own instrument which will allow them to practice at home at the same time teaching responsibility.

Way to go KIS Band!  Awesome Foundation Oahu looks forward to hearing you perform soon!
